MS Software Shadow Copy Provider (SwPrv) Service Defaults in Windows XP

Manages software-based volume shadow copies taken by the Volume Shadow Copy service. If this service is stopped, software-based volume shadow copies cannot be managed. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

Default Behavior

MS Software Shadow Copy Provider is a Win32 service. In Windows XP it won't start until the current user starts it. When the MS Software Shadow Copy Provider service is started, it is running as LocalSystem in its own process of dllhost.exe. If the MS Software Shadow Copy Provider fails to load or initialize, Windows XP start up proceeds without error messages, but information about the failure is being written into Event Log.

Dependencies

MS Software Shadow Copy Provider depends on the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service.

Restore Default Startup Configuration for MS Software Shadow Copy Provider

1. Select your Windows XP edition and service pack, and then click Download.

2. Save the WinXP_SwPrv_Service_Startup.cmd file to a local storage device.

3. Run the saved file.

4. Restart the computer.

The SwPrv service is using the dllhost.exe file that is located in the %WinDir%\system32 folder. If the file is changed, damaged or deleted, you can restore its original version from Windows XP installation media.
