Default Behavior

NetBIOS Interface is a file system driver. In Windows XP it is starting right at Kernel initialization. If the NetBIOS Interface fails to start, the technical information about the error is added to the Event Log. Windows XP startup should proceed, but a message box should be displayed informing the user that the NetBIOS service has failed to start.

Restore Default Startup Configuration for NetBIOS Interface

1. Run the Command Prompt.

2. Copy the commands below, paste them into the command window and press ENTER:

sc config NetBIOS start= system
sc start NetBIOS

3. Close the command window and restart the computer.

The NetBIOS service is using the netbios.sys file that is located in the %WinDir%\system32\DRIVERS folder. If the file is changed, damaged or deleted, you can restore its original version from Windows XP installation media.
