Fips Service Defaults in Windows XP

Default Settings

Startup type:System
Display name:Fips
Service name:Fips
Service type:kernel
Error control:normal
Registry key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Fips

Default Behavior

Fips is a kernel device driver. In Windows XP it is starting right at Kernel initialization. If the Fips fails to start, the technical information about the error is added to the Event Log. Windows XP startup should proceed, but a message box should be displayed informing the user that the Fips service has failed to start.

Restore Default Startup Configuration for Fips

1. Select your Windows XP edition and service pack, and then click Download.

2. Save the WinXP_Fips_Service_Startup.cmd file to a local storage device.

3. Run the saved file.

4. Restart the computer.
