Server SMB Driver (srv) Service Defaults in Windows 8

Enables connectivity from Windows XP and earlier clients.

Default Behavior

The Server SMB Driver service is a file system driver. It will not be started until the user starts it in Windows 8 Core, Pro, Enterprise. This service is starting automatically during the operating system startup in Windows 8 Core Windows 8.1, Pro Windows 8.1, Enterprise Windows 8.1, Core Windows 8.1 Update 1, Pro Windows 8.1 Update 1, Enterprise Windows 8.1 Update 1. If Server SMB Driver fails to start, the error details are added to Windows 8 error log. When the operating system startup is complete, the user is being notified that the srv service hasn't been started.


Server SMB Driver can't start, if the Server SMB Driver service is disabled or not available.

All the services listed below will not start if Server SMB Driver is disabled:

Restore Default Startup Configuration for Server SMB Driver

1. Select your Windows 8 edition and update pack, and then click Download.

2. Save the Win8_srv_Service_Startup.cmd file to a local storage device.

3. Run the saved file as an administrator.

4. Restart the computer.

The srv service is using the srv.sys file that is located in the %WinDir%\System32\DRIVERS folder. If the file is corrupted or deleted, you can put it back in there.
