Print Spooler Service Defaults in Windows 8

This service spools print jobs and handles interaction with the printer. If you turn off this service, you won't be able to print or see your printers.

Default Behavior

The Print Spooler service is an interactive service that shows notifications and message boxes when necessary. In Windows 8 it is starting automatically during the operating system startup. If Print Spooler fails to start, the error details are added to Windows 8 error log. When the operating system startup is complete, the user is being notified that the Spooler service hasn't been started.


Print Spooler can't start, if any service from the list below is disabled or not available:

If Print Spooler is disabled, the Fax service will not be started and initialized.

Restore Default Startup Configuration for Print Spooler

1. Select your Windows 8 edition and update pack, and then click Download.

2. Save the Win8_Spooler_Service_Startup.cmd file to a local storage device.

3. Run the saved file as an administrator.

4. Restart the computer.

The Spooler service is using the spoolsv.exe file that is located in the %WinDir%\System32 folder. If the file is corrupted or deleted, you can put it back in there.
