Microsoft Device Specific Module by Microsoft Corporation.

Default Settings

Startup type:Manual
Display name:Msdsm
Service name:msdsm
Service type:kernel
Error control:normal
Group:System Bus Extender
Path:%SystemRoot%\system32\DRIVERS\msdsm.sys

Default Behavior

Msdsm is a kernel device driver. In Windows 7 it won't be started if the user doesn't start it. If Msdsm fails to start, Windows 7 attempts to write the failure details into Event Log. Then Windows 7 startup should proceed and the user should be notified that the msdsm service is not running because of the error.

Restore Default Startup Configuration for Msdsm

1. Run the Command Prompt as an administrator.

2. Copy the command below, paste it into the command window and press ENTER:

sc config msdsm start= demand

3. Close the command window and restart the computer.

The msdsm service is using the msdsm.sys file that is located in the %WinDir%\system32\DRIVERS folder. If the file is changed, damaged or deleted, you can restore its original version from Windows 7 installation media.
